I can second many of the suggestions here: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Mérida, Querétaro. I didn't mind Playa del Carmen either, but I didn't love the touristy vibe there near the main beach area. Great hub for tequila tours. It has good nightlife, great historical downtown, and great looking people. There's also a big beach. In terms of locations, CDMX is a great place to start. It’s not as overwhelming as you may think, given that most expat life is centered in Condesa and Roma. Great base to meet people who have done what you’re doing. If you're on the other side of Mexico and want to surf and chill by the ocean, there's a little up and coming area called La Brisas de Zicatela in Oaxaca.
